Six Senses Kanuhura: Maldivian Island Life, Reborn

Iconic Maldivian resort reimagined with bold design and multi-bedroom retreats on an incredible natural island

BANGKOK – June 2023 – Six Senses Kanuhura is now open for bookings for stays from September 1 onwards. Home to one of the largest and most iconic natural beaches in the Maldives, the resort encompasses another two white-sand private islands, one for intimate desert island dining and the other for the ultimate castaway escape. Days are lived adrift, sun-soaked and sandy, surrounded by luminous waters. Time well spent under a gently swaying palm tree is interrupted only by the lure of food, fun, “me time” in the spa, or “we time” with loved ones or a passing turtle.

Six Senses has intentionally opted to reinvent a Maldivian icon, reimagining the existing resort and resources while continuing to protect the natural beauty of the island. What stays has been enhanced, from the Drift and Bottega dining outlets to the organic gardens, where a microgreens nursery mingles with the beauty of wild orchids. The 91 beachfront and overwater villas include 12 new Beach Retreats. These offer one to three bedrooms and private pools just steps from the ocean, spot on for families or larger groups.

Bryce Seator, General Manager, says: “Watching the island transform in the past few months has been an exciting journey, and we all look forward to revealing the new Six Senses Kanuhura. Following its long history, the island has been reborn, and the overall experience has been reinvented to bring the brand’s sustainability and wellness ethos to a new corner in the Maldives.”

Tropical island sophistication

Whether staying on the shore or perched on stilts over the tranquil lagoon, all accommodations offer a sophisticated yet charming style to combine elegance with feet-up comfort. Inspired by turquoise lagoon waters and lush tropical nature, the interior color palette includes marine hues and down-to-earth tones that fully blend with the natural environment. The design is purposely bold, polished over rustic, and resolutely eco-friendly: everything is crafted from local and sustainable materials. The villas and retreats feature large windows allowing natural light to enter throughout the day and draw the eye to the island’s lagoon and the Indian Ocean. The outdoor rain showers give a sense of bathing in nature under the expansive starlit sky.

The reinvented experience

Adventures and stories begin at Six Senses Kanuhura. Suitable for families, couples, or friends traveling together, there is an array of activities, on land, on the waves, and underwater, for everyone to enjoy. Younger guests from three to 11 years old can discover their creativity or more of the island and marine life at the Grow With Six Senses kids club, which offers fun and educational activities, such as treasure hunts, kids’ yoga, crafts, and upcycling. Families can opt for family cooking classes, watersports lessons, or private beach dining, spending quality time together. The Island Hideout is a place for teenagers to sit back, relax and enjoy games with their peers, in a space specially designed for them. Couples can enjoy romantic and intimate moments gazing at Lhaviyani’s famous sunsets at the new multi-deck Point restaurant and bar, or an “I do” moment during a private dinner on the beach under the stars.

This island escape will fit so snugly around everyone’s vacation hopes that there’s no need to escape each other after all.
Getting there

Six Senses Kanuhura is located in one of the most pristine corners of the Lhaviyani Atoll, 150 kilometers north of Male, a short 40-minute seaplane ride from Velana International Airport (MLE).

The Six Senses Kanuhura team is excited to welcome its friends, old and new, and celebrate the latest addition to the Six Senses family.

TOURISM RAJASTHAN: A FEAST FOR THE SENSES & PALATE! by Dr. Kaviraj Khialani- Celebrity Master Chef.

India as we all are well are of has been a land of multi-cultural diversity and for the fact that we embrace the thoughts and walks of our citizens with an open mind, it has always been a place which attracts tourists from all over the country and the world today who wants to visit various parts of India to explore not only the culinary aspects and hospitality of every state which is very impressive and engaging but also the flavours and culinary offerings which are not just robust, colourful and extravagant but also have a variety to choose from in order to suit all age groups.

This summer of 2023 has been very special for me on the whole since I finally made my way to Rajasthan covering three well known places namely Jaipur, jodhpur and Udaipur. The plan took its pace as soon as the entire plan fell in place and it was a sigh of relief since finally a little break was happening after a long time which was much awaited and due.

The excitement grew as the date of travel neared closer and bags packed, the flight boarded and reached to Jaipur to start with. I have always been a little particular about my plans before leaving home that all need to be falling well in place and no last-minute hotch potch issues to surfacing upon arrival for the holiday. And so did the case be, my car and driver were all set to receive me at Jaipur Airport which dropped me at Holiday Inn Jaipur City Centre, an impressive hotel with a five-star rating, loads of guests in house and a very warm welcome extended by the culinary team of chefs headed by Chef Surendra Shekhawat was heart- warming and a chilled glass of soothing coconut water which came by as a welcome drink was truly wow! After a little settling in the room it was time to check on the spa in the hotel which offered number of treatments to relax at the sohum spa. The green herbal tea and kadak boiled chai served there too was just amazing and soul refreshing!

The evening was set for local markets and sight seeing from the museums to the street markets which was pretty impressive as well to check out the local stuffs made there from the bandini prints/ block prints/ bedsheets and more. For dinner way back at the hotel we were greeted by the food & beverage manager at holiday inn who recommended we try the oriental and Chinese restaurant which was also hosting a Mongolian foods fiesta. The chef at this outlet was chef Nitesh who not only offered some lip-smacking delicacies from the special menu but also pampered us with his signature dishes which are still so very lingering on the palate even now!

The later part of the evening was for leisure and it was spent over a cuppa coffee and conversations with some of the other department staff of the hotel as well including Mr. Aekham from housekeeping department who made sure my room was all set before check-in and a photo cake with number of desserts were arranged on a platter and came as a surprise as well upon entering the room on the floor. calling it a day and squeezing into the very comfortable bed in the room and within a matter of few seconds the dreams den took charge.  The next morning was a very pleasant one and started with the lavish spread of live counters, Indian and continental breakfast which was offered by the hotel. Must say I did stuff myself a little since it was too tempting overall.

The further part of the day was for sight seeing and meetings lined up catching up with some old-time friends, connects, fans and students as well from hotel management colleges who dropped in to take job guidance and advice on their near future plans and it was a very pleasant evening on the whole. Dinner and late-night coffee were like cherry on the cake. Overall, I must say that the experience at Holiday Inn was a great one and Chef Surendra Shekhawat, Chef Nitesh Kanet and the team took very good care and offered best possible hospitality. Must mention here will be the coconut jaggery ice-cream prepared by Chef Nitesh which is not only his in-house creation but also excellent in taste – a must try when you visit his restaurant. Also, not to forget & appreciate the talented man behind the scenes Executive Chef Ramesh Kukreti.

The next destination was Jodhpur!

After a nice drive from Jaipur enroute jodhpur was nature at its best and a smooth journey with a little lunch break made me reach the famous Indana Palace Hotel- Jodhpur. A warm welcome yet again and a royal rose sherbet coming our way as a welcome drink was truly heart-warming. A quick and swift check in and we arrive into a nice palatial room well prepared and presented to make a mark of impression which truly met my expectations. Upon arrival in my room, I get a call within a few minutes from Mr. Kuldeep from the In- Room Dining stating that a refreshing mint- lime mojito drink is on the way to the room to enjoy & refresh & so was it. Very well-made drink at the right temperature and great flavour. Another person I must mention here is Mr. Vikas Soni from the food & beverage department- asst. manager at the Indana Palace, Jodhpur who not only ensured that I was comfortable during the stay but also was a great host at the restaurant from suggesting some really great dishes to try out from the menu- signature of the place, we did go by the same and it was magnificent! It was also great meeting the legend -Executive Chef Mr. K. C. Verma at Indana Palace & we had some really great conversations in regards to the food industry and chef shared his valuable experience over the years which was truly inspiring and motivating. Chef not only offered us some of his best tandoori speciality samplers and some great vegetarian delicacies to try out but also ensured we ate well and enjoyed the flavours from his kitchen.

Besides a great choice of breakfast from live counters to fresh cooked dishes the restaurant staff too were very cooperative and extended a great support all through my stay. The hotel also has a good spa which we tried for a basic treatment and is a must visit venue inside the palace hotel near the poolside.

Jodhpur too was a nice place to explore from the ancient monumental venues to the places of historic interest, the forts especially the Ummaid Bhawan Palace here was very interesting and it was a great experience visiting here. Overall, it was a wonderful experience at jodhpur as well with a little local shopping, some great Rajasthani foods and culture, I had great memories to take back from every person I came across here.

On the final destination it was now time to reach Udaipur! A place much awaited on my list to visit for the very first time and to explore- visit and also meet a few old connects kept up the excitement. For Udaipur after much research and recommendations I had selected The Ananta Resorts, a place which not only creates a great first impression but also takes one back close to nature, greenery and serene atmosphere to unwind and relax! Upon a warm welcome and quick check in here as well which was well managed and executed by Mr. Vaibhav Ameta- Senior duty manager- front office, it was a moment to indulge into some nice Chinese food at their restaurant which was served for lunch, good taste and flavour showed up here too in order to make me carry a positive impression all the way during my stay. The restaurant manager here Mr. Raza Shaikh was very warm and welcoming, made us feel comfortable during the meal hours and ensured that all went well on my table. Mr. Suman- the executive at the restaurant who attended my table during the meal was very open to having conversations and guest with hotel staff connect happened quite smoothly here as we spoke. Mr. Rambilash- f & b executive also was a friendly and helpful person here at the resort.  After a nice meal I check into my villa room up all the way on the level 6 at the resort, there are buggies and cars which shuttle up and down all through and are a just a call away.

The room here too was pretty impressive, well set and hygienic, presentable and had all the features of creating a good first impression. Mr. Rakesh Damor from housekeeping department was a very friendly employee here and made sure that everything was fit and fine in my room all through the stay. Chef Shravan a senior chef at the Ananta resort, Udaipur along with his team was very instrumental in ensuring that the buffets, live counters and overall set up was being done promptly. He was not only a person who loved interacting with the guests but also was open to suggestions and feedback from them in order to make things better in the days to come as per the guest expectations.

Chef Shravan not only was a great individual to interact with and have culinary conversations with but he also surprised me with a number of his delectable delicacies from Indian and Chinese cuisine during my stay at Ananta Resort, Udaipur. Besides Ananta on my list, I also had an opportunity to meet with a number of hoteliers, chefs and hospitality experts here at Udaipur which was truly heart-touching. To start with the young- energetic & talented Chef Mushtaq, who also manages the very impressive hotel at Udaipur called the parallel- a five star rated hotel with a very impressive open air restro- lounge which was just too cool- great ambience and amazing food well curated, crafted and complimented with choice of beverages. Chef Devendra who is known for his Italian dishes also presented some of his specialities during my visit to the hotel especially the mushroom risotto which was wow!  The parallel hotel has a good number of rooms, suites- standard rooms well designed, state of the art – very well clean and hygienic set up which not only suits the traveller on the move but also great for those who wish to unwind and have a family holiday as well. The hotel also has an excellent SPA and gym facility as well. food served here is perfect to suit the tastes of all age groups and has a choice of Indian- Arabic- oriental and the chefs are open here to even customise dishes to your taste as needed to offer you a great experience. A must visit hotel when in Udaipur – The Parallel!

Udaipur was all about exploring, meeting people, interacting with like-minded professionals and networking! One of the much-awaited hotels to visit on my list was the absolute wonder – The Oberoi – Udaivilas & yes, the name says it all. A property which not only represents ultimate luxury with class and quality but is also very well known for its culinary diaspora! Upon having reserved a table for lunch at the Udaivilas, I met with yet another legendary talented and well experienced chef Mr. Alok Anand, the executive chef at the Oberoi Udaivilas. Chef Anand thoroughly pampered us during this lunch with some of the great mouth-watering Rajasthani delicacies from this kitchen which came dished out with a touch of royalty and garnished to perfection, piping hot and it is going to be difficult for me to define the aromas and the first impression while it all came down on the table- simply superb! From the desi Indian starter platter to the mongodi ki subzi to gatte ki curry, the dal makhni cooked on a low flame for hours, the lacchedaar parathas, salad, raita it was all simply amazing and to add to the cherry on the cake was the home-made gulab ki kheer which is one of the signature desserts of the hotel, it was just out of the world. We enjoyed the kheer till the very last spoon. While we kept saying there’s no place for dessert Chef Anand challenged us that it would be a delight for the palate and it truly was! This was one of my best dining experiences with some great conversations with chef Anand at the Oberoi Udaivilas. I am now looking forward to my next visit to the hotel for a stay as well to experience complete luxury like never before!

While the weather during the day time was a little warm the evenings at Udaipur were pretty pleasant and windy and to make the most of it I also happened to accept a dinner invite from a few old connects to sit by the lake Fateh Sagar at an open air dining place to have a nice re-union coupled with some great food and beverage, this too was a nice experience and there’s nothing like enjoying conversations with great food and company which matters a lot!

Udaipur for me was the finale of this rendezvous journey to Rajasthan this summer of 2023, though it happened all of a sudden it turned out to be great! The 3 cities Jaipur- Jodhpur and Udaipur makes me take back some of the fondest memories of recent times which will remain with me forever.

On a concluding note, I must thank each and every one who made this possible in order to cover all these places, the wonderful hospitality at Rajasthan every place, every person, every hotel employee, common man had a lot of humility and down to earth attitude which speaks miles about the places and would surely be a positive recommendation from my end to everyone who loves to travel, visiting new places in our own country itself must visit Rajasthan at your own convenient time during the year, it is a must go and visit destination.

Swim with butterflyfish in Koh Tao, Thailand

Koh Tao Island is no less than a tropical haven, thanks to the profusion of spectacular beaches, dive sites, and a wealth of different activities to enjoy. Tanote Bay, located on the island’s east coast, is perfect for travellers who wish to witness the Kingdom’s marine life teeming with various species, such as butterflyfish, angelfish, parrotfish, rabbitfish, and groupers.

The island encourages ethical and sustainable tourism by organising Spotlight Koh Tao, an annual event comprising workshops and exhibitions which inspire tourists to participate in activities such as coral reef rehabilitation, sea glass jewellery making, coco tie-dye making, and fish aggregation with locals, among other initiatives that contribute towards marine conservation.

Witness the largest aggregation of whale sharks in Qatar

As a peninsula surrounded by the Arabian Sea and blessed with year-round sunny weather, Qatar is famous for crystal-clear beaches, waterparks, and marinas that invite everyone to try out activities and experiences.

The country also serves as the perfect habitat for many aquatic species that thrive in warmer temperatures, such as the Hawksbill Turtles that feed on marine delicacies at Al Ghariyah Beach. In addition, Qatar is home to the largest aggregation of whale sharks that prefer the warm and shallow sea waters of the country’s northeast coast, located about 145 km from Doha and reached by yacht. Qatar also accommodates the world’s second-largest population of Dugongs at the Al Thakira mangrove forest. One can witness these underwater creatures in full glory from April to September by kayaking.

Discover vibrant corals in the deepest atolls of Maldives

From heavenly beaches and lush palm trees to turquoise waters and diverse marine life, the Islands of Maldives embody everything perfect for a leisurely escapade. Designed in harmony with the natural environment, The Residence Maldives offers myriad activities catering to every traveller’s interest, including the world’s largest and deepest coral atolls.

The waters of the resort’s Gaafu Alifu atoll are home to over 1,200 species of corals, fish, sharks, green turtles, manta rays, and eagle rays. You can witness them by snorkelling and deep-sea diving. The resort also largely contributes to marine conservation by being part of the Maldives Underwater Initiative promoted by the Maldivian Ministry of Tourism and the Protect Maldives Seagrass, an initiative launched by the Blue Marine Foundation.

Save the endangered turtles in Oman

Nestled between the majestic mountains and glittering waters of the Gulf, Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah, Muscat, reflects the beauty of this Middle Eastern country. The sea around the resort is replete with rich marine life, such as turtles, rays, eels, fish, coral reefs, and shipwrecks that make beautiful underwater sights.

A fully equipped and professionally staffed Dive Centre arranges daily excursions and guided diving tours. A night-time expedition and three daily dives are available too. Marine experts guarantee that everyone makes the most of their aquatic adventure. Oman is home to five different species of turtles, and one of the nesting sites is Shangri-La Muscat’s private beach. The Turtle Care Project aims to protect the endangered hawksbill and green turtle species as a ranger looks after nests and protects them from potential threats. Between March and September, when hundreds of turtles return to the resort’s beach to lay eggs, guests are invited to witness hatchings, help to protect their nests and attend Turtle Talks at the hotel’s Eco Centre.

The Gulf of Oman is also home to hundreds of dolphins, sometimes seen together in pods of 250. Every morning, tours depart from the resort’s marina, even as marine experts talk about conservation efforts and ways to contribute to them.

Feel the adrenaline rush in Ko Pha-Ngan, Thailand

Akin to its sister islands, Koh Samui and Koh Tao, Ko Pha-Ngan is a paradise for thalassophiles and water sports enthusiasts. Travellers can indulge in water activities, such as snorkelling, scuba diving, wakeboarding, kitesurfing, parasailing, and kayaking.

COREsea, a marine research and conservation programme instituted on this island, has been educating people about Southeast Asia’s marine biodiversity. They conduct independent research and experiments and even provide research vessels, diving equipment, and accommodations for those who wish to observe and volunteer in their marine conservation mission.

The Anam Mui Ne Recognised Among World’s Top Boutique Independent Resorts

The Anam Mui Ne, a remarkable resort with a design inspired by the Indochine era, has joined an exclusive selection of the globe’s leading boutique independent luxury properties – the Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH) portfolio.

The resort, which opened in January this year on the Mui Ne beach, is the first Vietnamese property to join SLH, deemed the most desirable community of independently minded travelers and independently spirited hotels in the world.

Hotels must undergo a stringent vetting process and conform to the highest standards of luxury and guest well-being before being accepted into the SLH’s characterful collection of intimate spaces in unusual places

Headquartered in London with offices worldwide, SLH represents 520 hotels in more than 90 countries that are anti-chain and anti-same and offer secluded, discrete options. Benefits for SLH’s traveling members include discounts on bookings, early check-in, and late check-out, complimentary breakfast, room upgrades, and more.

The Anam Mui Ne’s founder and owner Pham Van Hien said he and the resort’s team were thrilled to be recognized by such a prestigious group that shared his passion for an intimate, classic, and distinctly Vietnamese hotel brand that is a welcome counterpoint to the industrialized hotel chains.

“It is an absolute honor to join SLH and for The Anam Mui Ne, crafted by age-old artisans from across Vietnam, to be recognized as the collection’s first Vietnamese property,” said Mr Hien.

The appointment of The Anam Group’s group general manager Laurent Myter as a member of the International Advisory Board of Hoteliers for SLH’s APAC region marks the first time that a representative from Vietnam has had a seat on the advisory board.  He was previously an executive director and the president of SLH’s International Advisory Board of Hoteliers for three years and two years respectively.

Perched on 1.2 hectares of spectacular oceanfront, the independently owned and operated resort is blazing new ground in Mui Ne, a popular beach town within an easy commute from Ho Chi Minh City.  With 127 elegant rooms and suites, two restaurants and a bar, a five-treatment-room spa, two spacious swimming pools - one fresh water and the other saltwater – a ballroom, conference rooms, water sports center, fitness center, yoga room, kid’s club, gift shop and more, The Anam Mui Ne is redefining the benchmarks of an upscale experience at Mui Ne.

Borrowing deeply from the templates of architecture inspired by the grand old French villas in Hanoi and the garden homes of Central Vietnam, the resort pays homage to both colonial-era and classic Vietnamese aesthetics. To wit, the customized encaustic mosaic tiles, Cham decorative vases and statues on plinths, teak furniture crafted from sustainable forests, stone from Thanh Hoa and Nghe An, and authentic thatched roofs from Binh Thuan.

The Anam Mui Ne has a ban on single-use plastics and has implemented an array of measures to reduce its carbon footprint ranging from solar power and locally sourced ingredients. Laundry water is recycled to water the gardens. Straws, bags, and bathroom amenities are biodegradable. The resort’s eco-friendly key cards are also made of wood that’s been sourced from sustainably managed forests.

The Anam Mui Ne is preceded by the 2017 launch of The Anam Cam Ranh, that’s been lauded by some of the industry’s highest accolades.

2023 Australian Tourism Exchange opens on the Gold Coast

May 2023: The 43rd edition of Tourism Australia’s largest annual trade event, the Australian Tourism Exchange 2023  (ATE23), has officially opened on the Gold Coast with around 2,300 delegates expected to take part in the event at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre.

This year ATE has returned to its traditional format for the first time since 2019, with four days of appointments. The tourism travel show has taken place in a condensed hybrid format over the past two years.

Tourism Australia Managing Director Phillipa Harrison said the first full ATE in years is an important milestone for the Australian tourism industry as it continues to rebuild off the back of the most challenging few years in its history.

“International travelers are returning to our shores but the competition for the global tourism dollar is now greater than ever before which is why business-to-business events, such as ATE, are so important,”  Miss Harrison said.

“ATE brings together tourism businesses, tourism wholesalers, and retailers from around the world for  four days of appointments as well as networking events, while our international buyers get the chance to experience our world-class tourism offerings first hand.”

“The delegates visit from more than 30 countries and we know once they have seen what Australia has  to offer for themselves they will be well placed to tell travellers why Australia is the best place in the world for their next holiday.”

Tourism and Events Queensland CEO Patricia O’Callaghan said the whole state was ready to welcome  ATE delegates in what is another important step forward in our international recovery.

“ATE is our primary opportunity to put Queensland in front of crucial international trade and media partners and we have an incredible program lined up.”

“The industry has continued to invest whilst borders were closed and as a result, we have opened to the world with billions of dollars of new infrastructure, products, and experiences that have been completed or under construction across the State.”

“There is strong enthusiasm for this event in Queensland and for these partners to arrive and see first-hand our world-class tourism experiences.”

“Queensland will bring the largest contingent of tourism businesses of any state and we look forward to the opportunity to reconnect with these important partners.”

“Our comprehensive familiarisation program will also show first-hand why Queensland is a bucket list destination with nearly 500 people from more than 30 countries exploring everything from the reef to the rainforest, the ocean to the Outback and of course our iconic beaches.”

“Rebuilding Queensland’s $6 billion international market is critical to the future of tourism for this  country.”

“We welcome the 2,300 delegates to the Gold Coast and to Queensland and know they will leave with strong business partnerships and memorable moments shared exploring our state.”

Destination Gold Coast Interim CEO Karen Bolinger said the Gold Coast has transformed in recent years into one of the nation's most vibrant destinations.

"We want the Gold Coast to be one of the most desirable destinations across the world and ATE gives us an extraordinary opportunity to position ourselves as Asia-Pacific’s most dynamic and innovative holiday and business events destination,” Miss Bolinger said.

“ATE will be our time to really shine and showcase to the world a rejuvenated Gold Coast as delegates  experience first-hand every flavour of our city that we enjoy every single day.”

“The Gold Coast boasts golden beaches which is home to the world’s first floating underwater reef, unspoiled waterfalls and hiking trails through World Heritage listed rainforest and cool urban coastal precincts, all within a 45 minute radius.”

ATE23 will run from 30 April to 4 May 2023, with around 2,300 delegates from 30 countries. The delegates include around 650 international buyers and 80 international media who will also have the  opportunity to participate in pre and post event familiarisations.

ATE23 is delivered by Tourism Australia in partnership with Tourism and Events Queensland and  supported by Destination Gold Coast.

Bustle is owned by Sunny Rachwani, a vibrant restaurateur whose family has been in the restaurant industry for 40+ years. After successfully running the crowd-favourite 90ft Above, Bustle is Sunny’s newest passion project and his best one yet!

Commenting on the launch, owner Sunny Rachwani said, “We are extremely grateful for the success of 90ft Above, but after 7 years, we knew it was time to reinvent ourselves. With Bustle, we’ve gotten a whole new team, created an atmosphere that caters to people across ages but is youth-centred and brought in global vegetarian food that not a lot of other restaurants cater to.

The place champions both a lounge where you can relax and a party place to dance to the tunes. Our food and drinks are going to be in line with our elevated and modern vibe and we can’t wait to open up Bustle’s doors to our loving patrons.”

The restaurant specialises in 100% vegetarian global food, a rare sight to see, that too with an added Indian twist. It’s headed by Chef Vinayak Mohite who’s previously been associated with names such as London Taxi and Woodside Inn. The menu features fare across Indian, Lebanese, Mexican, Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Burmese and more, making sure that there’s something in store for everyone.

Some of their must-have dishes include Mushroom and Truffle oil Flatbread with piped truffle cream cheese and black truffle oil glaze because there’s no such thing as too much truffle, Guacamole On Table where chefs will prepare fresh guacamole with crispy Togarashi Wonton chips, Stuffed Bhavnagari Chili on a bed of Makhni Gravy that combines Indian mirchi poppers with the classic makhani gravy for something old and new, and the sumptuous Chettinad jackfruit tacos and Ghee roast mushroom with Malabar paratha.

Pair this with their range of unique and carefully crafted cocktails such as their Casaba with sparkling wine, melon and lime, Déjà Brew with vodka, baileys and coffee or Elder Florita with rum, elderflower and mint. The bar is designed and stocked keeping in mind people’s diverse tastes and the cocktails are lip-smacking enough to keep you coming back for more. And worry not if you’re a teetotaller because their mocktails like Melon Burst with a splash of melon, lime and sparkling water,  Cucumber Collins with a hint of cucumber and elderflower or peach-based Georgia on my mind are no less!

Bird Paradise set to open in Singapore, adds to growing list of attractions for visitors

Mumbai, April 2023:  Singapore offers Indian travellers a wide range of experiences to choose from while visiting the destination. Adding to this vibrant repertoire, the country has announced the soft opening of Bird Paradise on 8 May 2023. The new park will be located within the integrated nature and wildlife destination of Mandai Wildlife Reserve in northern Singapore, which is also home to the Night Safari, River Wonders and Singapore Zoo.

Also opening next to Bird Paradise, is a new ungated public node called Mandai Wildlife West, which has playgrounds and an array of dining and retail options, and serves as the gateway to the new park. The opening of the new attraction will give families another enticing reason to fly to Singapore for their holidays during the peak school holiday travel season.

Amongst the highlights at Bird Paradise are eight large walk-through aviaries, each reflecting different habitats of the world which will come to life with the colours, vocalisation and natural behaviours many birds species. With a firm focus on conservation and education, Bird Paradise will also take visitors through transitional zones that connect the various habitats where they can learn about the unique avian world. Feeding sessions, a much-loved highlight at Jurong Bird Park previously, return with new species of birds to get up close with like the Starlings, African Hornbills and Barbets at Heart of Africa, Pelicans at Wings of Asia, and the Lories at Lory Loft. All proceeds from animal feedings go towards the conservation projects that Mandai Wildlife Group supports in Singapore and across the region.

Today, Indian travellers are far more open and discerning in their preferences particularly when it comes to selecting travel experiences, right from nature-themed parks to adventure activities. In addition to the Singapore’s new bird park, the iconic Singapore Cable Car is launching Pokémon-themed cabins from 1 May onwards, as a part of its 50thyear celebrations. These cable cars navigate through a picturesque route as the journey begins from a mountain-top, traverses through lush green foliage and passes through a building, all the while offering visitors stunning aerial, 360-degree panoramic views, before arriving at Sentosa. Popular amongst Indian fans as a resort destination for leisure and family friendly experiences, Sentosa has transformed through the years to become a vibrant destination with hidden gems to be discovered by every generation of travellers. The island will unveil Sentosa Sensoryscape, a multi-sensory experience in 2023, the first milestone of the Sentosa-Brani Master Plan, which will transform Sentosa into a game-changing leisure and tourism destination. Sentosa is also buzzing with options from marquee festivals to popular restaurants, attractions, and spa retreats.

In a move to encourage visitors to explore more during their travel to Singapore, the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) has recently launched the SingapoRewards, a new programme that offers complimentary experiences in Singapore for international visitors. This will run through 2023 and will provide visitors with an opportunity to try one of nearly 40 new or “off-the-beaten-path” experiences in Singapore for free.

Over the years, Indian travellers have chosen Singapore as a preferred destination for their holidays owing to its unique blend of contemporary outlook combined with emphasis on high-quality facilities.  This momentum continued in 2022 when India accounted for 686,000 of the overall 6.3 million global visitor arrivals, emerging as Singapore’s second-largest source market after Indonesia (1.1 million visitors). With direct flight connections from 16* Indian cities, the city well-positioned to meet the growing demand for travel from India.

The STB has been working closely with its industry partners to drive consideration and awareness for the destination among Indian consumers. Speaking about the new attractions in the pipeline, Mr. GB Srithar, Regional Director, India, Middle East, South Asia and Africa said, “Indian travellers are discerning, curious and keen to trying out new experiences when they are on vacation. With the launch of Bird Paradise and a number of other world-class modern attractions and experiences, consumers in India have a wide array to choose from while planning their holidays to Singapore. In addition to this, STB has also collaborated with its industry partners to launch the ‘Enjoy your picture-perfect family holiday” campaign.  Under the recently launched SingapoRewards, Indian travellers could experience unique experiences, 40 to choose from, for free. We hope this encourages Indian travellers to plan their unforgettable holidays in Singapore this summer travel season and beyond.”

Ms Jean Choi, Chief of Sales & Marketing, Mandai Wildlife Group added: “Indeed, we are excited for Indian travellers to make new memories with fresh offerings across all our wildlife parks, which are now conveniently located in one single destination. Plus, there’s nostalgia at Singapore Zoo, too, with a jubilee birthday coming up this year. We look forward to welcoming everyone at Mandai Wildlife Reserve.”

An Intimate Meal in the Majesty of a Private Waterfall in Vietnam

A secluded retreat in Mai Chau launches new dining options for waterfall dining experience

HANOI (March 23, 2023) - While hotels often serve up a unique dining opportunity or two for guests, few can compete with Avana Retreat, a resort in Vietnam that evolved around a once hidden waterfall deep in the mountains of Mai Chau. This month the hillside resort is rolling out a selection of new menus to be enjoyed by this one-of-a-kind waterside perch.

The towering limestone cliffs, where the waterfall reaches its peak height, form the backdrop for intimate meals set to the sounds of nature at its most raw. The setting has been left as untouched as possible. A raised walkway weaves through the old growth trees to a wooden platform at the waterfall’s base. Bookable for private dinners and intimate group parties, the deck features a kitchen, where chef and server work in unison to deliver multi-course meals, and an elevated platform area where a small band could share a performance. The whole scene is lit by the warm glow of dozens of handcrafted lanterns that are peppered throughout the space.

The experience is private with only one small group, family, friends or couples able to book the waterfall dining experience each evening. Guests have the choice of four five-course menus, two of which have just been launched. The Vietnamese Signature menu is abundant in seafood with dishes such as grilled catfish served with rice noodles and local herbs and Vietnamese spicy & sour seafood soup. A plant-based option has been added with creative fare including a burrata and tomato salad with asparagus saffron dressing and mushroom tortellini with a carrot puree and almond foam.

The Chef’s Special and a Sense of Romance, have a European touch with courses like Beef Wellington, a popular British dish, and Lobster Cognac Flambe. Local elements include a Cao Phong Orange Mousse, made from the Cao Phong oranges that are a specialty of the province, and smoked duck breast.

As an avid explorer, Avana Retreat’s founder Mr. Vu Huy, was hiking in the region over a decade ago when he had a gut feeling there was a waterfall hidden amid the forest. Locals couldn’t confirm his hunch so he set out to follow the stream and was rewarded for his efforts. The majestic cascade inspired him to develop the property to share his find, but to do so in a way that would protect the surrounding environment while giving travelers a chance to experience the awe he felt.

“Our waterfall is the heart of the retreat,” said Mr. Vu Huy. “We also realize that the way to a person’s heart is often through their stomach. We wanted to combine stellar food with an incomparable backdrop to touch their hearts and help our guests create a lifelong memory of their time in Vietnam.”

Course menus start at 4,500,000 VND ++ / pax or 9,000,000 VND ++ for two people, exclusive of wine. Reservations are essential with a recommendation to book well in advance as there is only one seating per evening. The waterfall area is also bookable for small group celebrations with the capacity to cater for up to 30 guests. For more information visit: https://avanaretreat.com/cuisine

The White Plate - A Blank Canvas for Culinary Artistry

Panjim, Goa: When food transcends into art, the humble plate becomes the canvas upon which the artist presents his masterpiece. Gleaming white porcelain sits regally amongst her entourage on a lush tablecloth. A row of silverware on either side sparkles, while the stemware stands sentry to her right, twinkling under the soft lighting. With all their pageantry, they cannot compete with her. The spectators are hungry for a dazzling display, and she is the stage upon which the magic happens.

For Chef Jason DeSouza, a white plate represents endless opportunities to create, innovate and captivate the senses with gastronomical delights. It comes as no surprise then, that he has chosen to unveil his first restaurant in Goa recently and name it after his muse. The White Plate by Chef Jason promises a culinary experience never seen before in Goa, which is otherwise known for its rich and vibrant culinary landscape.

“For me, fine dining is about elevating the senses,” he says. “It’s a delicate harmony of textures, flavours and scents which come together - gently balanced to deliver an almost transcendental experience.” A sneak peek of the highly-guarded and yet-to-be-revealed menu assures a feast for the senses, with exotic offerings from the world of molecular gastronomy. Savoury olive oil snow, amsol foam, caviars made from honeysuckle and cider, kokum gels and ghee dusts are just some of the alluring mentions that catch the eye. Ingeniously paired with some of the choicest ingredients, the mix of flavours and textures seem intriguing indeed.

The philosophy behind this revolutionary menu is based on what Chef Jason considers the coming together of his own heritage and his experiences in the famed kitchens of Culinary Masters Alain Ducasse and Gordon Ramsey. “From Gordon, I learnt the nuances of building impeccable flavours, while Alain taught me about finesse and elevating dishes to the next level. The offerings at The White Plate will combine these key elements, accentuated by the nostalgic flavours of our own backyards,” he says.

Nostalgia can be a powerful tool within a culinary artist’s hands, capable of transporting one to places unknown and familiar at the same time. A classic goal corned veal tongue paired with edamame pearls and a kokum gel would simultaneously take one back to their grandma’s kitchen and to foreign lands in just one bite. Pairing a kasundi caviar with a modern ratatouille traverses the distances between Kolkata and Paris in a single morsel. Deconstructed, reconstructed, spherified and cloaked in the mystery of scented smokes and beguiling aromas, Chef Jason’s daring combinations at The White Plate urges food enthusiasts to explore the thrill of the unknown, while offering the soul-warming comfort of flavours familiar to our palettes.

Alma Resort Grows Its Own Food At New Onsite Farm

CAM RANH, Vietnam February 2023– Thirty-hectare beachfront resort Alma has cultivated its own onsite farm to produce an array of fruits, vegetables, herbs, and chicken eggs, affording organic zero-kilometer vegetables for guests’ meals and beverages.

In a bid to make Alma more self-sufficient and sustainable, landscape manager Ngo Duc Thinh and his team of green thumbs have transformed parts of the family resort into a 1000sqm nursery garden, a 260sqm chicken farm, and a 180sqm herb garden.

Situated on the northern end of Alma’s grounds, a short walk from the Active Youth Club for teenagers, the nursery garden is thriving with bananas, coconuts, papaya, squash, passionfruit, sunflowers, daisies, and more. Adjacent to the nursery garden, the chicken farm is currently home to a growing brood of 17 hens, six roosters, and 18 chicks.

Situated just outside beachfront restaurant Atlantis, with panoramic views of Long Beach, the herb garden is brimming with mustard leaves, morning glory, red and green chili peppers, Vietnamese basil, lettuce, green onions, white radish, bok choy, tomatoes, and more.

Currently, all the farm’s produce is directed to the resort’s restaurants. Bananas, coconuts, and eggs, for example, are served during breakfast at Alma Garden restaurant. Lettuce and mustard leaves are included in salads and coconuts are provided as drinks at Atlantis. Italian restaurant La Casa’s traditional Caprese salad features tomatoes from the herb garden along with locally produced mozzarella cheese.

Leftovers from the resort’s kitchens are used as compost and the farm is watered with recycled water. Complimentary garden tours are on offer for the whole family, with staff sharing fruitful tips on how to cultivate a veggie patch at home. Children also learn how to care for chickens.

Alma also plans to host cooking classes on the farm, where guests pick and clean their ingredients to cook their own healthy meals.

“We feel so proud to be putting our resort’s land to good use by creating our very own farm and embracing the ‘farm to table’ movement; it’s so rewarding for our team of gardeners to see how the kitchen staff love picking produce from the farm and to see guests of all ages take tours of the farm with interest and curiosity,” said Mr Thinh.

“There’s a lot of talk in the hospitality industry about going green but it’s really important to walk the talk and this is yet another initiative at Alma that helps create a more sustainable holiday for guests,” added Alma’s managing director Herbert Laubichler-Pichler.

The resort’s ‘hotel as farm’ efforts follows numerous initiatives including plans to implement Vietnam’s most ambitious solar power project for a hotel yet, and the appointment of a sustainability officer.

Government of Dubai Media Office February 2023: Dubai received 14.36 million international overnight visitors in 2022, growing 97 per cent YoY from the 7.28 million tourist arrivals in 2021, according to the latest data published by Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism (DET). The growth, which enabled the emirate to surpass global and regional tourism recovery levels, contributes to the goal of the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to consolidate Dubai’s status as one of the world’s top three cities for travel and business.

His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai said: “Dubai’s ability to rapidly accelerate tourism growth, which has marked it out as a clear frontrunner in the international industry,  demonstrates the far-reaching vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to transform the emirate into an important global player in shaping the future of vital sectors. The remarkable rise in international visitation in 2022 supports the ambitious goal of the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 to double the size of the emirate’s economy by 2033. The tourism and travel sector contributes significantly to the leadership’s aim of making the emirate a model for excellence in the global economy.

“The exceptional growth in the inflow of visitors reflects Dubai’s continued rise as one of the world’s most connected cities and its determination to lead the world in hospitality infrastructure and service levels. The high growth shows the world that we never rest on our achievements and constantly work to raise our benchmarks. I am confident that Dubai will be an even greater catalyst for the growth of global tourism and travel connectivity in the years ahead."

By closing in on its pre-pandemic visitation of 16.73 million in 2019, Dubai’s 2022 tourism performance further validated its ranking as the No.1 global destination in the Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards 2023 for the second successive year, only the second city in history to achieve the feat. The latest data from the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) shows that global tourist travel in 2022 was 37 per cent lower than 2019. The Middle East saw the strongest relative increase, with arrivals climbing to 83 per cent of pre-pandemic numbers. Dubai exceeded both global and regional barometers of recovery with visitors to the city in 2022 reaching 86 per cent of pre-pandemic levels.

His Excellency, Helal Saeed Almarri, Director General of Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism, said: “Aligned with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to make Dubai the world’s most visited and re-visited destination, the performance of our industry in 2022 shows the extraordinary progress made by the city over the past two years. While the global economy remains in a state of flux, Dubai has emerged as a clear leader in the tourism industry. The robust performance is a testament to Dubai’s growing role at the vanguard of global tourism recovery. The positive momentum also shows that tourism remains a significant contributor to the city’s economic growth and sustainable development, further driving the goal of the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 to reinforce Dubai’s status as one of world’s top three cities for tourism and business.

“The effectiveness of our strategies and initiatives gives us the confidence to tap new growth opportunities in the global travel and business sectors over the next few decades. As the fastest growing city in the Middle East, Dubai’s continuous growth has been made possible by the unwavering support of our stakeholders and partners and a raft of strategic investments and federal policy reforms that have led to a steady flow of global entrepreneurs, talent, investors, and business and leisure travellers. The industry-wide success has also encouraged us to redouble our efforts to provide more opportunities for Emirati talent to contribute to the growth of Dubai’s tourism sector, aligned with our cutting-edge industry nationalisation programme to build the next generation of tourism professionals. We will continue to accelerate momentum throughout 2023 and beyond by focusing on all the key elements that have placed Dubai at the forefront of the world’s leading travel destinations – a diversified approach to markets, an evolving multifaceted destination proposition, continuous collaboration with our partners, all of which have enabled us to deliver exceptional value to visitors from around the world,” HE Helal Almarri added.

Dubai’s international markets maintain momentum

The strong performance in 2022 features some noteworthy spikes in Dubai’s traditional key markets and strong growth across emerging markets. Dubai remained a first-choice safe travel destination for visitors from the city’s stronghold markets.

From a regional perspective, Western Europe and GCC regions each accounted for a 21 per cent share of arrivals. The GCC region in particular saw an exponential increase in their share of arrivals from 13 per cent in 2021 to 21 per cent last year. South Asia contributed 17 per cent of total volumes while the MENA region contributed 12 per cent, further reinforcing Dubai’s continued appeal to travellers from proximity markets. The Americas accounted for seven per cent of arrivals while the North Asia and South East Asia region and Africa each contributed five per cent and Australasia accounted for two per cent.

His Excellency, Issam Kazim, CEO of Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing, said: “As Dubai continues to grow exponentially in line with the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 launched by our visionary leadership to make Dubai one of the world’s top three cities for tourism and business,  it remains committed to moving to the next level with new and unique world-class infrastructure, experiences and attractions. The sheer diversity of the destination proposition and Dubai’s growing profile as a safe, open and accessible destination saw the city being chosen as the No.1 global destination for the second year in a row in the Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards 2023.   Our partners played a pivotal role in achieving the No.1 ranking with their contributions to both Dubai’s tourism growth and the sector’s global rebound, as well as their active participation in all our global campaigns and marketing activities that have driven consideration for Dubai as the destination of choice for global travellers. The exceptional support of our public and private sector stakeholders and partners will be instrumental in raising our ability to showcase our unmatched offering designed to meet the diverse preferences and budgets of international travellers, as we gear up to welcome more visitors to Dubai in 2023.”

Hospitality sector achieves significant growth

Dubai’s hotel sector, which continues to be integral to the emirate’s destination promise and the overall growth of the tourism industry, continued to perform strongly across all hospitality metrics.

Average occupancy for the hotel sector in 2022 stood at 73 per cent, one of the highest in the world, rising from 67 per cent in 2021. The figure is just short of the 75 per cent occupancy in the pre-pandemic period of 2019. The high occupancy is particularly noteworthy as it was achieved despite a 16 per cent increase in room supply in 2022 compared to 2019. Dubai’s hotel inventory at the end of December 2022 comprised of 146,496 rooms at 804 hotel establishments, compared to 126,120 rooms available at the end of December 2019 across 741 establishments. The total number of hotels in 2022 marked a six per cent growth over 2021, with 755 hotel establishments offering 137,950 rooms, figures that highlight the continued strong investor confidence in Dubai’s tourism sector.

The hotel sector outperformed pre-pandemic levels across all other key measurements – Occupied Room Nights, Average Daily Rate (ADR) and Revenue Per Available Room (RevPAR). Occupied room nights reached a record high of 37.43 million room nights in 2022, registering a 19 per cent increase vs. 2021 (31.47 million) and a 17 per cent increase over the pre-pandemic period of 2019, which yielded 32.11 million occupied room nights.

The ADR of AED536 in 2022 surpassed the ADRs for both 2021 (AED451) and 2019 (AED415), with 19 per cent and 29 per cent increases respectively. The hotel sector’s robust performance is also evident in its RevPAR growth – an increase of 30 per cent compared to 2021 (AED391 v AED301) and an increase of 25 per cent over the pre-pandemic period of 2019 (RevPAR of AED312).
